On January 27, 2017, the moral safety of the world was put in jeopardy by President Trump.
He signed an executive order to indefinitely suspend the resettlement of Syrian refugees. The order also suspended all other refugee resettlement for 120 days, as well as the entry of nationals from Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, and Libya for 90 days.
This order prohibited innocent people from entering the United States such as Hameed Khalid Darweesh who worked for the Army’s 101st Airborne Division. According to platoon leader Brandon Friedman, Darweesh was responsible for saving the lives of countless U.S. service members in Iraq.
Along with a host of organizations, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) took President Trump’s order to court on January 28th, and won. Federal District Court Judge Ann M. Donnelly issued a stay, blocking the policy, and preventing refugees and immigrants from deportation. The constitutionality of the order wasn’t ruled on, but many men and women are now safe. The ACLU is a firm believer that the order was discriminatory based on the banned regions being Muslim territory.
Lyft is in solid agreement with the ACLU as they have vowed to donate $1,000,000 to the organization over the next four years to help them defend the U.S. Constitution. Lyft believes President Trump’s order is contradictory to their company’s and the nation’s core values.
